My answer may sound like blasphemy to many, but my belief is that a dojo is anywhere where a group of like minded people come to train, regardless of location.
If I throw the mats down in my back garden, and people come to train submissions or Kata Oyo, then at that point in time, my back garden is a Dojo.
I think that the way Chinese stylists view the concept of a Kwoon should be more akin to what we want a dojo to be, rather than this 'vision' of what a dojo should be, with Shomen and Flags, etc.
I used to teach karate in a boxing gym. We used the bags, pads, and even the throw-up buckets...but that was our dojo.
Anything else is just superficial.
What do you guys and gals think?
